FLAME RETARDANTS: SAVING PEOPLE

During the 20th century we have seen a shift away from the use of traditional materials such as wood and metal in furniture to new materials such as foams, plastics and synthetic fillings fibres. The newer more technically advanced materials are more suitable for use, however they carry a higher flammability risk and hence there is a growing risk of building fires.

Research at the University of Surrey showed that since UK legislation came into force flame retardant furniture products have already saved 710 lives, caused 5770 less injuries, and saved £2,15 billion.

Flame retardants are being used increasingly in order to enhance the safety profile of the final product. New standards & regulations are becoming stricter and are being implemented in new geographical markets.

Although Flame Retardants help to save lives, some traditional chemistry can pose a significant risk when it comes to smoke toxicity, or the environment.
